Can you imagine fifteen full days waking up every morning with a different wave in front of your window? One day it breaks at Razo, the next at Pantín, then you sleep at the Estreito area with the tide washing your motorhome’s wheels. Well, Galicia is an excellent destination to combine surfing and motorhome for two whole weeks without repeating a single beach. And here’s the best part: there is a trick few people know. There are two motorhome areas located literally on the sand, where the only alarm clock is the sound of waves breaking 50 meters away. One is in Jove, the other in Vicedo. If you want the day-by-day of a 15-day route with timings, distances, and secret spots, keep reading. This is what no wave seeker has told you.

Galicia has more than 1,500 kilometers of coastline. In fifteen days you can travel from the Portuguese border to the Eo estuary. But for surfing, the best areas are two stretches: Costa da Morte and Rías Altas. What makes Galicia an excellent destination to combine surfing and motorhome is its network of free areas, the lack of crowds outside of August, and the possibility of finding waves for all levels. If you don’t have your own motorhome, the solution is simple: Motorhome rental in Madrid. Pick one up, fill the water tank, tie your board to the roof, and head northwest. Now, let’s go day by day.

Days 1 and 2: Costa da Morte starting strong

Early departure from Madrid. It’s about 600 kilometers to Malpica. You arrive in the afternoon. The first spot is Seaia beach, right next to the town. It’s a long beach with a right-hand wave over sand. A dirt parking lot where motorhomes sleep without problems. No services, but you have views of Cabo Roncudo. First night listening to the Atlantic.

Second day: wake up, check the forecast. If there is a northwest swell, go to Razo beach. It’s 15 minutes away. Razo has one of the longest waves in Galicia, up to 300 meters of ride on good days. The parking lot is huge, on gravel, and full of motorhomes. You can sleep right there. In the afternoon, visit the Nariga lighthouse. Second night at Razo. Important: no water or dumping, so keep an eye on your tanks.

Days 3 and 4: Pantín and the mythical wave

Drive one hour north. You arrive at Pantín, a beach world-famous for the ASP World Tour in the 90s. The wave is hollow, breaks over rocks, for experts only. But there is a huge asphalt parking lot right above the beach. It fits motorhomes of all sizes. The trick: go down to Balea beach, right next to it, which is more sheltered and good for intermediates. Sleep in the Pantín parking lot. There is a beach bar in summer. At night, the starry sky is spectacular.

Day 4: if the sea is flat, take the opportunity to explore the town of Ortigueira. Its estuary is famous for the folk festival. You can also surf at Espasante beach, 10 minutes away, with a softer wave. At night, look for the Cariño motorhome area, near Cape Ortegal. It has basic services. It’s worth it for the sunset on the highest cliff in Europe.

Days 5 and 6: Motorhome area at Estreito beach in Jove

We arrive at one of the gems. The Motorhome area at Estreito beach in Jove is right behind the dune. There are 15 spots with no services, but the location is unbeatable. Estreito beach receives northwest and north swells. Left and right waves over a sand bar. The bottom changes with the tides, so ask the locals. You can stay two days here without getting bored. There is a small bar in summer and coolers to buy ice. Sleeping here is an experience: you go to bed with the sound of the sea and wake up watching the early bird surfers.

Day 6: if you want variety, Abrela beach is a 5-minute walk along a path. It’s smaller and works on low tides. You can also go to the port of Jove to buy fresh fish for dinner. At night, return to Estreito. The area fills up fast, so if you arrive after 6:00 PM in summer, there may be no spots left.

Days 7, 8 and 9: Motorhome area at San Roman beach in Vicedo

Half an hour east by motorhome. The Motorhome area at San Roman beach in Vicedo is different: it sits on an old concrete slab next to the sand. It fits about 10 motorhomes. No services, but incredible views. San Román is a huge beach, open to the ocean, with powerful waves. Only for intermediate and advanced levels. The current is strong, don’t go in if you’re not confident. Days 7 and 8 you dedicate to surfing here. Early morning usually has less wind. In the afternoon, the north wind ruins it, so better to have a morning session.

Day 9: rest your legs. Drive 10 minutes to Area beach in Viveiro. It’s more sheltered, good for beginners or for going with kids. The town of Viveiro has a motorhome area with dumping at the marina. Take the opportunity to empty gray and black water, fill the fresh water tank, and buy supplies. There are large supermarkets at the entrance of Viveiro.

Days 10 and 11: exploring Rinlo and the border with Asturias

Head east, passing through Foz. As Pasadas beach is long with a soft wave, good for longboarding. The parking lot is on compacted sand, suitable for motorhomes. You can sleep there if there are no restrictions. Day 11: you arrive at Rinlo, a fishing village with impressive cliffs. Os Castros beach has a left-hand wave over rocks, only with a big swell. I don’t recommend sleeping there because access is narrow. Better to return to Foz or continue to Ribadeo.

In Ribadeo you have to see the Cathedrals beach, but at low tide and with prior reservation. For surfing, Os Bloques beach has a decent right-hand wave. The parking lot is large. From here you can already see Asturias on the other side of the estuary.

Days 12, 13 and 14: return inland and last session at Razo

You start the way back, but not on the highway. Go down the coast to A Coruña. Day 12: stop at Campelo beach, near Pontedeume. It’s a huge beach with a right-hand wave over sand. Good dirt parking. You can sleep there. Day 13: you arrive at A Coruña. Park at the Riazor motorhome area, right next to the beach. It’s paid but has all services. Riazor has an urban wave, breaks along the promenade. It’s a curious experience to surf with the city in the background.

Day 14: last serious session. Return to Costa da Morte, to Razo beach. Arrive in the afternoon, set up the motorhome, and take a last bath until sunset. Sleep in the Razo parking lot. It’s a tradition: the last night is always at Razo.

Day 15: return to Madrid

Breakfast watching the waves. Empty the tanks at the Razo campsite (pay 5 euros). Check that you haven’t left anything behind. And head back to Madrid. It’s 6 hours by motorhome with one stop for lunch. You arrive at night, tired but recharged.

15-day summary map

Days 1-2: Malpica (Seaia) and Razo

Days 3-4: Pantín and Ortigueira

Days 5-6: Motorhome area at Estreito beach in Jove

Days 7-9: Motorhome area at San Roman beach in Vicedo

Days 10-11: Foz and Rinlo

Days 12-14: Campelo, Riazor and Razo

Day 15: Return

What to bring in your motorhome for 15 days of surfing in Galicia

The water is cold all year round. Bring two 4/3 mm wetsuits. One dries while you use the other. 3 mm booties and a hood for windy days. A clothesline to hang the wetsuit in the motorhome bathroom. You also need a small dehumidifier or lots of ventilation, because humidity is high. The board: always carry it on the roof, not inside. If you have two boards, one for big waves and one for small days. Don’t forget cold water wax (temperate in summer). And a first aid kit with bandages and cream for wetsuit chafing.

Where to empty and fill tanks during the route

Free beach areas have no services. Here are the points where to dump:

Razo Campsite (paid, about 5 euros)

Cariño motorhome area (free, with dumping)

Viveiro marina (paid, about 3 euros)

Riazor area in A Coruña (included in the 12 euro/night fee)

Plan ahead: empty every 3-4 days. The gray water tank of a motorhome lasts about 4 days if you are frugal.

Frequently asked questions about 15 days of surfing and motorhome in Galicia

Do I need to book at the Estreito or San Román areas so far in advance?

You cannot book, they are free.
